     Designing T-Shirts in Canva

Creating custom T-shirt graphics for our fundraising drives is a fun and creative way to support STEM education. Follow this step-by-step process to ensure your design looks great and is ready for printing.

Step 1: Set Up Your Canvas (Correct Print Dimensions)
To make sure your design prints sharply without pixelation, set up a custom canvas size before you start:

Log in to Canva.com (or open the Canva app).

Click Create a design on the top-left corner and choose Custom size.

Change the unit dropdown from px to in (inches) or set it to high-res pixels:

    • Recommended size: 4500 x 5400 px (or 15 x 18 in).
    • Resolution: Ensure high DPI/resolution for garment printing.

    Name your design file: MM_Tshirt_[YourName]_[Theme].

Step 2: Choose Your Design Theme & Elements

Focus on a STEM Theme: Choose a clear concept, such as a clever science pun, robotics illustration, coding humor, space exploration, or a clean Maker Mindz brand design.

    Typography & Text:

    • Use bold, easy-to-read fonts. Script or thin fonts can be difficult to see on fabric.
    • Use Canva’s Effects tab to add curves, outlines, or drop shadows to make text pop.

    Graphics & Vectors:

    • Go to Elements and search for vector graphics (e.g., "atom vector", "robot illustration").
    • Choose graphics where you can customize the colors to match our brand colors.
    • Important: Do not use copyrighted images, logos, or trademarked characters.

Check Color Contrast & Shirt Compatibility
Design with garment color in mind!

    • Light-Colored Shirts: Use dark text/graphics (navy, black, dark teal).
    • Dark-Colored Shirts: Use light text/graphics (white, light blue, yellow).
    • Pro Tip: Click Edit Background Color on your Canva workspace to temporarily switch between black and white background preview colors to ensure your design stands out on both.

Step 3: Preview on a Shirt Mockup
Before finalizing, preview how your artwork looks on a realistic shirt:

    • Select all elements in your design and group them.
    • In Elements, search "T-Shirt Mockup".
    • Place your artwork onto a T-shirt mockup to check the scale and position (e.g., chest placement vs. full front).

Step 4: Share Your Editable Canva Project
Share access to your editable Canva design so we can review, edit, or adjust layer placements if needed:

    • Click Share in the top-right corner.
    • In the "Add people or teams" box, enter the Maker Mindz email: info@makermindz.org.
    • Set the permission dropdown to Can edit.
    • Click Send so we have full access to the project file.
